Eye contact these days is ever decreasing as we all engage in more screen time. Children may be the ones who will suffer the most. An recent article in The Australian points out that eye contact and touch can have a significant impact on how people respond to stress, anxiety and ill health. It is a practice that we often employ in trauma release, eye to eye meditation and yogic healing.
Neuroscientists at the University of Adelaide team of have shown through brain imaging that eye contact and simple touch can stimulate stress receptors and hormones that reduce pain and improve trust. Both oxytocin and serotonin production is increased with eye contact. This boosts the immune system and the endocrine system, which produces hormones and helps regulate mood, growth and development.
Fiona Kerr, a neural complexity specialist, said that tests on brain activity showed that looking someone in the eye who may be distressed, ill or anxious triggered a calming response. This is a wonderfully simple intervention that we can all use more…
“It’s the same when your partner or kids are upset, you calm them. Nothing else will do that, drugs won’t do that.”
This Sunday at the upcoming Compassion Retreat, we will use direct eye contact with various mental trainings in compassion to bring about healing and the very best of health.
Do come.
Wishing you good health,
Celia Roberts.
